ASAT, the water and sewerage authority of Antalya, held a tender on 7 October to expand the wastewater treatment plant in Mahmutlar. The same package covers new pre-treatment equipment at the plant in Gazipaşa. The works are valued at 457.5 million Turkish lira. The lowest price, 390.98 million lira, came from a joint bid by ACD Mühendislik and Uygur Yapı. The bids are still being checked, and no contract has been signed yet.

The Mahmutlar plant is designed for 20,000 cubic metres of wastewater a day. In the project documents ASAT explains why it needs rebuilding: the district now has more permanent residents and more tourists, the equipment is worn out, and the plant gives off a smell. The two existing aeration tanks will be fitted with membrane units for 25,000 cubic metres a day, and the plant will also get two ultraviolet disinfection units, three decanters for dewatering sludge and five blowers. Under the tender terms, construction is allowed 240 days from the day the site is handed over to the contractor.

Home buyers usually look at the sea, the shops and the roads, and only think about the sewers when something goes wrong in summer. Yet every new building in Mahmutlar, whether a finished project or one of the residential complexes under construction, is connected to the same plant. A developer in Turkey builds the house and the pipes leading to it, while the amount of wastewater the plant can take is ASAT’s responsibility. If you are choosing a flat from the catalogue, it is worth asking how the building is connected to the mains, just as you would ask how far it is to the beach.
