New rules for acquiring investment citizenship in Turkey

On January 1, 2023, amendments to the legislation on obtaining citizenship by investment when buying real estate came into force. The key change that may be unfavorable for foreigners is that they will not be able to obtain citizenship when buying real estate in shares. If earlier spouses purchased a house for two and, having overcome the minimum cost threshold in each share, apply for citizenship of the country, now each property should have only one owner. Housing should not have been included in the investment citizenship program before. Thus, to obtain citizenship, it will be impossible to buy an apartment from a foreigner who previously obtained citizenship when acquiring it.
